"Clean, Drain, and Dry" your boat to stop the
spread of aquatic invasive species. This is just one of many steps outlined by
the Lake Whatcom Management Program this boating season to prevent the spread
of aquatic invasive species to and from Lake Whatcom.
"The first step is educating boaters on how to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species, but we also need to collect data on how many boats are being launched and whether they are coming from infested waters," said Teagan Ward, the City's Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator. By keeping the City's boat launch open, staff can focus on collecting this information to implement a more comprehensive program by next boating season.
New signs now greet park users at the launch to remind boaters to Clean, Drain, and Dry their boats to stop the spread of invasive species. Additional signs will be posted in the coming weeks at other launches in Lake Whatcom and Whatcom County lakes.
